Asking for a German friend - We've got an American nanny that we want to sponsor. We'll put her papers in with our lawyer next week, as we've been advised to wait for her new passport to arrive first (old one had nearly expired). Once we put it in, there will be six weeks until the date she would have to leave the country. Our lawyer seems to think it will go through before this. Anyone got experience with the timing of these employment visas?

It should be approved within 6 weeks but it can take longer. Upon submitting the documentation the KVR may issue a temporary visa valid for 3 months just in case the process does take longer. They usually issue a fiktionsbescheinigung which is a temporary extension of whatever visa they currently hold. So if she holds a tourist visa then it is an extension of that. If they do not issue one then you or she can ask for one or if the visa hasn't been approved by the time she is supposed to leave then she simply goes back to the KVR and asks for one.
